Micly — Privacy Policy

Overview

Micly is a Chrome extension built by MachineFriendly that provides a convenient dictation mode for use with web-based chat interfaces. We are committed to protecting your privacy.

Data Collection

Micly does not collect, store, or share any personal data such as voice recordings, transcribed text, browsing history, or personally identifiable information.

Micly sends a minimal diagnostic report when a critical UI element (e.g., the dictation button) cannot be found on the page. This helps detect and fix compatibility issues. The report contains only:

  • A randomly generated installation ID (not tied to your identity)
  • The name of the missing UI element
  • The extension version number
  • The configuration version number

No personal data, voice recordings, text content, browsing activity, or IP addresses are stored. Reports are sent to a secure endpoint and used solely for maintaining extension compatibility.

How It Works

  • Voice transcription is handled by the web page's own built-in dictation feature. Micly does not process, intercept, or store any audio data.
  • Clipboard access is used solely to copy transcribed text to your local clipboard so you can paste it elsewhere. No clipboard data is transmitted externally.
  • Local storage (chrome.storage.local) is used only to persist your dictation mode preference between sessions. This data stays on your device.

Permissions

Micly requires the following Chrome permissions:

  • clipboardWrite — to copy transcribed text to your clipboard
  • storage — to save your preferences between sessions
  • Host permissions — to display the dictation interface on supported pages and maintain compatibility
  • alarms — to keep the extension up to date

Third-Party Services

Micly operates within supported web chat interfaces. Voice transcription is performed by the website's own functionality — Micly provides a convenience layer for activating and using that existing feature. Your use of those websites is governed by their own privacy policies and terms of service.

Diagnostic reports and configuration updates are transmitted to secure third-party infrastructure services. No personal data is included in these requests.

Changes to This Policy

If we update this policy, the changes will be posted on this page with a revised date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
